Prologue

Some deserts are quite bearable. To the practiced eye, the scrub in between the gently shifting dunes can yield an exquisite array of gourmet food, providing your definition of gourmet is small shriveled things, bristly things, things with far too many legs, and cactus-flavored water. It is probably an acquired taste. This desert was nowhere near as hospitable, however. There was no plant life to be seen for miles, and the desert fauna had left months ago. Even those simple-minded creatures could recognize the tension in the air here.

The sky was the first sign of unease; normally clear, it had been filled with churning black clouds that swallowed up all the light from above. Even at midday, only grey, stagnant light could filter down to touch the black sands. Lightning flashed and leaped between the clouds, the resulting thunderclaps carrying to the ground below. A slight wind swept through the dunes, a slow, thick breeze that was eerily silent. Sand cascaded down the dunes after the breeze, as if trying to escape something.

A group of three forged on across the expanse, moving at a fast walking pace. Taking point was a creature that looked to be a cross between a man and a wolf, his body entirely covered in white fur except for a small green crescent on his forehead. His face was a picture of grim determination, with his jaw set firmly and his yellow eyes fixed on some point just beyond the horizon. To his left was a blue-black raven, gliding smoothly on the dry desert air, and to his right was a bright yellow bullsnake, undulating quickly through the sand as if it were parting in front of him to facilitate his movement.

“Take it carefully from here on in.” the wolf-man said. “There’s no telling what’s up ahead… Haiu!” The wolf glanced over in the raven’s direction. “Survey the skies.” He then turned to the snake. “Raiga, prepare your electricity.”

“Getting antsy, Iko?” Raiga quipped at the wolf. He seemed nervous himself, and so was trying to make light of the situation. One look from Iko was enough to silence him; the situation didn’t merit humor.

Ignoring the exchange, Haiu angled her wings and ascended on the breeze, eyes flitting over the horizon. Iko fell back to keep pace with Raiga, suddenly tense. The further they went into this desert, the more powerful the aura emanating from it had become, until now it was almost tangible.

“This is strange…” muttered the wolf. “You’d think that there’d be something out here… but there’s not even a trace, not even a footprint… So what’s causing the aura?”

Iko squinted, eyes penetrating into the distance, looking all around, before glancing up at Haiu, who had apparently just spotted something… behind them. Various animal figures seemingly composed of solidified shadow had begun to encircle them from behind. The flank appeared to have formed out of thin air; even as they approached, they left no track on the sand.

As his attention shifted, he realized that still more were encroaching now from all sides, surrounding them. “Damn…” Iko cursed, spinning around once more, as if trying to get a look at all of his enemies at once. Raiga took a position behind him, facing the other side of the ambush, blue-white electricity crackling around him. Haiu glided down to circle around the confrontation, eyeing up their new foes. “Such a dense darkness… Something not even you can pull, Iko,” she remarked. The situation turned to a tense pause, the air filling with a silence that, while brief, seemed to last an eternity…

Then, the battle started. It was like a snap: both parties began moving in the same instant. From the front end, the dark figures marched forward at speed, their bodies floating above the ground. Iko stepped forward, focusing, green blades forming on the outside of his arms, about a foot-and-a-half in length, originating at the wrist and hooked toward the elbow. He lunged out to meet the leading shadow, a tiger, slashing out at its face with his blades; the blades failed to cleave through, meeting the shadow like a wall of concrete. The tiger lunged at him, and he parried, and fell back slightly, slashing again.

Raiga was having a bit more luck: focusing for several moments, the snake fired out an electrical burst from its mouth at the shadow approaching him, the light from the attack dispersing it. The attack was costly, and a direct hit seemed to be required for a kill… nevertheless, with no time to think, Raiga fired another bolt to take out the one Iko was holding off.

Unfortunately, Iko’s formation left Haiu wide open in the skies. As a few more creatures occupied Iko and Raiga, five more of the shadows rushed up toward the raven. Haiu countered, sending a barrage of blue needles hurdling towards one of the shadow creatures, which shrugged off the blow easily.

Catching her off guard, one of the shadows seemingly rammed into the bird, and enveloped her. An incredible shriek of pain was let out as the bird began to disintegrate; starting from the wings, she turned to red dust, the transformation working inward until Haiu was gone.

“Haiu!” Iko yelled and, in his moment of distraction, was forced into another deadlock. “Damn it…” he muttered. There was no time for mourning, though, no time to let up, especially now with their numbers cut by a third.

Slowly, the shadows gained ground on the pair in the center, the encirclement tightening. The situation seemed hopeless, but neither of them voiced the thought. There was no opening through which to escape—all they could do was hold their ground. It became apparent that even this would soon be impossible when a lion shoved its way clear of the press of shadows and made a swing at Iko’s face. Iko cursed, trying to dodge, but the claws managed to gouge out a chunk of his ear before the lion was destroyed by Raiga’s lightning.

“We’re losing momentum,” Iko said quietly, edging closer to Raiga, using his right hand to try to stop the flow of dust from his ear. Raiga hissed, trying to impose himself between Iko and the nearest group of shadows, since they now seemed wary of him.

“One of us has to get out of this,” Raiga whispered after a moment. The snake had been trying to focus energy, the time it needed to finish increasing each time he was forced to distract himself and launch another attack. “Even if I use the next stage, I’ll likely die here… but if you can escape from this place, then perhaps I won’t have died in vain.”

Iko was silent—he couldn’t afford to show weakness, and he didn’t like what Raiga was insinuating, but he couldn’t refute it. Iko had always been the less skilled between them at sensing power, but even he could tell things were hopeless here.

Not waiting for an answer, Raiga’s body became ablaze with light. The figure within rapidly changed shape, shifting from a snake to a serpentine blue dragon, at least twelve feet long, with a jagged yellow stripe down its back. A more powerful lightning ball surged from Raiga’s mouth, destroying two shadows and damaging a third in the direction where the press was thinnest.

Iko understood what the serpent was trying to do. With regret and guilt clutching at his heart, he turned and charged through the gap, knowing this may be his only chance to escape. Seeing occasional flashes of blue from Raiga’s attacks, Iko knew that he couldn’t afford to look back, a lone tear leaving his right eye.

Always the showoff, Raiga… Iko thought to himself as he slid down a dune. He had to keep moving.

Hmm... If we rework the plot significantly, I think we should make a more overtly stated connection between Tridara and Shiko. This intro made that apparent to me.
