PostSubject: 5b.) The Falconess Returns   5b.) The Falconess Returns I_icon_minitimeSun Aug 15, 2010 2:56 pm

The few days after the event in the rock quarry were more quiet ones, which was a fortunate occurrence, as many DaCre had taken various injuries during that time. Given their nature, however, provided limbs weren't missing, they would all be fully healed, at this point. Perhaps still a little groggy...

It was a fair day, the sky grey, looking as if it could rain or stay like that in the sky for the rest of the evening. Classes had been let out, right into the weekend. Luke had the interesting time of balancing college and keeping track of his DaCre...

At any rate, on this day, new DaCre were forming on this end, one on the very outskirts of the city limits, and unable to be sensed.

Blake stifled a yawn. He considered the final corner of toast on his plate, prodding it a few times. He glanced to his left, where Evell was had a seat to himself, perched on top of a huge dictionary, the only book in the house. The bird gave an enthusiastic nod, prompting Blake to push the plate towards him. Evell devoured the bread with single bites, swallowing each bit with an odd jerk of his head.

"Isn't that unhealthy for you?" Blake asked, his head lolling on an arm, half-asleep. Evell had insisted on greeting the sun every day by breaking into a loud, dissonant song.

Evell raised a tiny eyebrow. There was a mountain of dishes in the sink, and a bigger mountain of instant ramen in the kitchen cabinets.

"I know my house smells terrible to you, you don't have to point it out every moment you can." Blake sighed, then got up. He half-limped over to the sink, then splashed his face with water a few times.

"Is that all you use the water for?" Evell laughed his strange laugh, then flew over to land next to the front door.

"Let's get out of here. Something interesting is going to happen today."

"You mean like the time you shrieked at the birdwatchers?" Blake asked.

Evell merely laughed as Blake opened the door, and the both of them stepped out into the crisp morning air.

As Blake and Evell would walk outside, almost immediately, Evell would sense a nearby DaCre. It seemed like a 'familiar' aura, even though the DaCre in question was one that Evell had never met.

The pull was towards the inside of a nearby abandoned farm in this suburb; birds had already taken a habit into nesting inside this place.

"Ah, there, you see? I told you something interesting would happen today."

Blake, unable to sense anything, merely had a look of confusion on his face. A sound remarkably like a loud groan came from Evell.

"Just follow me," he said, taking off quickly into the air.

After a few moments, Evell stopped to take a look around, confused as to where exactly the DaCre was. He alighted in a tall tree to get a better view.

Sitting on the tree would reveal little: vast, open expanse in every direction; dark, non-descript, open barn-house which had chicken nests that other birds used to scavenge for nest materials... I mean, which of these two places could an attack come from?

Before the obvious could become even more obviously known, a golden bolt of energy fired out from the barn-house, striking the base of the tree, causing it to catch fire. Walking out of this barnhouse, extending its wings, was the falconess. She was different, however, given that her figure was now pitch-black, with vague, glowing red eyes, and a dim red light glowing from mid-torso. Another DaCre that had been infected by the virus...

Its staff was aimed outward, apparently what had fired the bolt.

Evell gave a small squawk of surprise, rapidly taking off into the air as soon as he noticed the flames. Without prompting, Blake backed up behind another tree for cover.

In an instant, a small sphere of blue energy had appeared before Evell, who fired it at the DaCre's midsection in a continuous beam.

The falconess was not a fool, and, for the moment, only had a mind for battling and infecting. It held its staff with two hands, taking and splitting the beam as it hit off its lustrous surface.

After that, continuing to press against the beam as necessary, it took flight, attempting to take this battle into close range, ready to take a quick, accurate swing once it was within the staff's range.

Evell discontinued the beam, then made a quick circle in the air to fly back in the same direction he had come. With his back to the DaCre, he flew up high in the air, increasing the distance between the two.

The falconess continued her pursuit, now with the distinct advantage of seeing Evell's back. Thinking quickly and coldly, she aimed a bolt in front of Blake, and fired, catching the tree that he was hiding behind on fire, both creating smoke and panic that would prevent him from directing Evell.

She then aimed again, firing a bolt directly behind Evell, as a means to take the bird down from the sky. Never turn your back from your opponent...

Blake let out a yelp, running out from his hiding place, thrown off-guard by the first DaCre that had ever actually attacked him. He flattened himself against another tree, ready to run if another bolt of energy came his way. He realized that it would be impossible to communicate with Evell the way things were going, although that was more a problem for him than the bird.

As the bolt of energy neared Evell, he spiraled away at the last second, having predicted the attack beforehand. He slowed down as the bolt passed him, then made another turn to face his opponent once more. Evell fell into a steep dive towards his opponent, but banked and released five fast-falling feathers when he was still easily out of danger of any sudden bolt attacks hitting him.

The opposite dodging also had to be true: with one powerful beat of the wings, the feathers' flight path abruptly changed, as the wind-power from the Falconess threw the feathers into disarray.

Looking squarely at Evell, the Falconess performed a feint, by aiming its staff at the bird. It then beat its wings again, a powerful gust of wind coming out towards the bird, which would send the wind that Evell was flying on into disarray, and probably send the bird into another, uncalled-for spiral, that would leave it vulnerable.

The Falconess also seemed to be focusing for something else...

Evell felt the abrupt change in the wind. He immediately used his innate to counteract the rotation, but the end result was a single, comically slow spin through the air as the bird struggled to stay airborn.

"Let's all just be dizzy, shall we?" Evell said, completing the spin and facing his opponent once more. His chest puffed up with air, and he let out a deafening shriek to break the DaCre's focus.

The falconess, although its ranking focus broken, stood her ground, holding her staff towards Evell, perpindicular to the ground (straight up-and-down) as she began to hear the shriek. The result of this action was simple: as the sound hit the long, metal pole, it caused the staff to recoil and produce a myriad of sounds from the pole, all very slight variations of the same shriek, that would send even Evell's ears into disarray, since it wasn't his own noise. Although the falconess was feeling the effects of this, she was both expecting it, and indifferent to pain in battle.

As such, as the staff was vibrating, she raised it, and took a steep diagonal swing with a fair amount of force behind it, straight at the center of Evell's body. The same thing she did to Echo... took a cheap shot after disorienting her opponent with their own attack. Even Blake's ears would be in disarray.

Evell was caught off-guard by the odd shrieking noises that had reflected off the staff. It didn't exactly hurt, but it wasn't exactly fun, either. There was a slow, labored flapping of wings for a moment, with Evell just barely staying aloft.

The staff hit exactly as intended, sending a wave of pain through the bird. There was a vague thought that wondered whether he'd be able to fly anymore in this battle, and he realized he would have to end this soon.

Pain. That was something he could focus on.

Another small sphere of energy formed in front of Evell as he rolled off the staff, unable to resist the pull of gravity. The beam would hit in a split second, before the DaCre could pull its staff back to block.

The quick-fired shot landed on the DaCre's shoulder, fracturing it, and forcing the DaCre to let go of the staff. Looking down at Evell, it lowered in height somewhat, and beat its wings powerfully, this time with sharp gusts, at Evell, enough to make minor cuts over the body.

It intended to keep this attack up while staying at range: while doing this, it held its left palm upward, a black sphere beginning to form.

~Oh, that doesn't look good,~ Evell thought to himself, discontinuing the attack. The small cuts that appeared on him hardly mattered much, compared to the fractured wing he'd received.

"You idiot, you'd better catch me," Evell shouted to Blake without turning his head. The ground was coming up fast, although he could slow himself somewhat by manipulating the wind around him for a cushion.

Evell angled his head slightly. Hitting the orb dead-on might be a bit much, but he could aim his beam at the other shoulder.

Evell charged up his beam one more time and fired.

The DaCre's dodge was simple: it moved out of the way in the air by increasing the force exuded by the wing of the aimed-at shoulder, and retracting the opposite wing when the beam was fired. The result was a diving motion that arced backward a moment later, the Falconess slightly closer to the bird than before.

The orb completed in the falconess's hand, the DaCre gave one powerful beat of the wings that sent a single gust downward, instead of using smaller blades. It hoped to, with this, thrust Evell into disarray.

If this succeeded, it too, would dive towards the bird...

Evell's response to this was to create a single cushion of air above him, letting the gust harmlessly push him into Blake's waiting hands.

"It's not over yet," Evell said quickly. "You remember what I told you?"

Blake nodded, taking his hardwire out of his jacket. He immediately began to focus his energy into it.

~It is over,~ the falconess spoke in the virus' electronic voice, landing in front of Blake, quickly opening its wings again, before beating them again, creating the barrage of wind blades, at this time, directed at Blake's body as a whole. The attack would damage his body and cause an impressive amount of damage, especially at the close range.

~Release the bird... you have five seconds...~ the falconess continued.

A few seconds were more than enough. Blake easily ignored the pain that seared through has body as large gashes appeared on his arms and legs, the blades of wind ripping through his clothes. Pain was nothing new to him.

"You want the bird? You can have him," Blake said. He made a quick toss, a silvery glint flashing off Evell as he quickly closed the distance between him and his opponent, darting between the blades of wind. A large sphere of energy appeared in front of him, quickly congealing into a beam aimed at the creature's torso.

The DaCre, as Blake had focused, also focused on her own energy, as her body gave off a light, fracture damage diappearing. Her wings earned sharp, metal edges; viscious spikes were added to her shoulder-armor, and the loose spear turned into a trident.

Retracting its wing, then moving it outward to cut through the beam with the metal, the DaCre stepped in towards the advancing bird, letting its opposite, orb-containing palm go straight for the bird's torso, at near point-blank range...

Evell let out a squawk, surprised by the unexpected resistance. A sudden blast of wind propelled him back a ways It wasn't enough, however, if the DaCre suddenly pressed the attack.

"Move," Evell commanded. Blake got for cover under yet another conveniently placed tree, just in time to see Evell take a deep breath in, and release a huge torrent of flames at the DaCre's extended hand.

~Futile...~ the falconess replied to the attack, kicking off and flying forward into the flames, using its wind innate to spread them somewhat, shielding the orb by covering it with its palm, shielding it between the palm and the upper arm.

Still going forward, now concealed by the flames (which damaged by duration: if it attacked straight through, it would be damaged, but not destroyed), the falconess' hand quickly outsteched on the other end, below the initial area of the flames, as it attempted to slam the orb into Evell's body...

Evell, although somewhat unaware of the approaching DaCre, had already ended the flames, intending them only as a distraction. He quickly soared upwards to gain some altitude.

It wasn't possible to fire those feathers, hit, and not do damage to the self, however: the falconess kicked off the ground, still protecting the orb, staying a very short distance away from Evell as she ascended below the bird. This would create an interesting perspective: it was easy for the falconess to look up, but harder for Evell to look down...

Anyway, the falconess intended to stick as close to Evell as possible, her wings cutting through the air easier than Evell's. It once again prepared the orb, while it was directly below Evell... as the wings would or would not prepare to attack, in the backstroke, is when the falconess would strike.
